What IBS feels like
IBS may be characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort that keeps coming back for at least 6 months with 2 or more of the following:
- Improvement with defecation
- Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool
- Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool
IBS symptoms may vary from person to person. Some other commonly reported symptoms are:
- Abdominal pain
- Bloating
- Discomfort
- Cramping when trying to have a bowel movement
- Mucus in the stool
For some patients, symptoms of IBS are accompanied by constipation, diarrhea, or both. Depending on the type of IBS you have, your symptoms may be constant or may disappear only to return after a period of time.
