Talking to your doctor
Your healthcare provider needs to hear it from you
You're probably well aware that IBS may not be an easy condition to live with. But there are resources and treatment options to help you.
Even though talking with your healthcare provider about your IBS symptoms may be uncomfortable, it's very important. Once your healthcare provider understands your symptoms, they can diagnose your condition, and recommend treatment.
Here are a few tips that can make that discussion as productive as possible:
- Take note of what worsens your IBS symptoms—stressful situations, specific foods, etc.—and bring this list with you when you visit your doctor.
- Bring up your IBS symptoms right at the start of your visit and explain how long you've been suffering.
- Describe your symptoms clearly and which symptoms are the most concerning to you.
- Tell your healthcare provider what medicine you've taken for your symptoms, including what has worked and what hasn't.
- Get clarity. Ask questions, have your healthcare provider say it again if you missed something or do not understand, and write down what is said at your appointment.
- Feel comfortable. If you feel shy about discussing sensitive subjects alone, ask a friend or relative to come with you to your appointment.
